IIoT machine data collection
In the industrial sector, data is of central importance. It helps monitor assets, identify potential problems, optimize performance and make informed decisions. However, collecting data from various machines and equipment can be a daunting task. This is where connectors for data collection come into play. These connectors collect data from multiple sources and send it to a central system for processing and analysis.
This article covers the protocols already supported by Autonoma's digital customer platform and describes how to configure them.
Why read data from machines?
Collecting and processing data is an important part of Industry 4.0. It enables companies to monitor plant performance in real time. This allows potential problems to be identified and fixed before they become major issues. Data can also be used to improve efficiency and make informed decisions.
In this context, data streams are used to continuously collect data from various machines and plants. These are stored and visualized in Autonoma's digital customer platform for easy access at any time. The configuration of data streams requires the selection of the right connector and data source.
Efficient data acquisition with our connectors
Connectors are key to efficiently collecting data from a variety of sources and transmitting it to Autonoma's central system for analysis and processing. Our connectors already support a range of protocols, including Modbus TCP, OPC-UA, CAN Bus and Siemens S7, making it easier to collect data from machines and equipment. Additionally, other types such as I/O connector for analog and digital sensors, Universal Robots and Secure FTP Server for secure data transfers are supported. The comprehensive selection of connectors can capture data from any source and streamline your data analysis and processing workflows.
Dynamic configuration of protocols means connectors can be added or removed as needed, based on data extraction requirements. This approach enables organizations to extract data more efficiently and cost-effectively.
Connector selection
Several factors must be considered when selecting a connector. One important factor is the type of data source from which the data is to be collected. This can be machines or other devices with data generation. Autonoma supports different types of connectors, such as Modbus TCP, OPC UA, Siemens S7 and other types such as CAN Bus, I/O Sensor, Universal Robots and SFTP. Furthermore, Autonoma's in-house protocols can also be integrated. A form guides step-by-step through the process of configuring a connector.
Data source selection
After selecting the connector, the data source must be selected. For example, the IP address and the port are required for Modbus TCP. In the next step, further required data is requested, such as a device ID.
A detailed description for the data acquisition with the OPC-UA connector can be found here:

Add data streams
After the previously explained steps have been carried out, the desired data streams can now be selected or newly defined. In case of creating a new data stream, a new pop-up window will open. This window guides step by step through the creation of a new data stream. After data streams have been created for the connector configuration, the polling interval can be defined. Once all data streams have been successfully selected or created, the configuration can be saved and the data read out after a short time.
Integration of user-defined connectors
In addition to established protocols such as Modbus TCP, Siemens S7 and OPC UA, proprietary company protocols may also be in use for extracting data from machines. Autonoma is able to develop suitable connectors for these proprietary protocols in a matter of weeks, allowing companies to continue using their preferred interfaces for data extraction. This flexibility enables greater adaptability and efficiency in industrial automation processes.
Effortless data collection with no-code solution
Collecting data can be a complex process that requires specialized programming skills. However, with our no-code process, data collection is simplified through guided, non-technical processes. Even existing employees without programming skills can easily create and modify data with the appropriate permissions. And with just a few clicks, anyone can change data points or adjust the frequency of the data rate within a minute. Our no-code solution allows you to quickly and efficiently capture the data you need without the headaches of traditional data retrieval.
